The 718 area code is one of three area codes that cover the four outer boroughs of New York City. Originally implemented in 1984, the 718 coverage area overlaid the boroughs of Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. In 1992, the Bronx was added to the 718 overlay area. The New York area code system allows for multiple area codes to cover the same service area, as the population continues to grow. The majority of cell phones in Manhattan today utilize the 718 area code.
Counties covered by the 718 area code include parts of Bronx, Queens, Kings, and New York Counties as well as a small section of Richmond County.
The entirety of the 718 area code is contained within the city of New York. Boroughs within the coverage area include Queens, Staten Island, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. Additionally, parts of Fluishing, Jamaica, Long Island City, and Far Rockaway are included.
